Day One – Industry leaders share critical insights on health-related social needs captured via data, pilots, and partnerships
William Shrank, MD, MSHS
Chief Medical and Corporate Affairs Officer, Humana
William (Will) Shrank is Humana’s Chief Medical & Corporate Affairs Officer. His responsibilities include implementing Humana’s integrated care delivery strategy, with an emphasis on advancing the company’s clinical capabilities and core objective of improving the health outcomes of our members. Will is also responsible for developing and strengthening the company’s relationships with key partners in state and federal government to meaningfully impact public health policy to promote better health outcomes.
Previously, Will served as Senior Vice President, Chief Scientific Officer, and Chief Medical Officer of Provider Innovation at CVS Health. Prior to joining CVS Health, Will served as inaugural Director, Research and Rapid-Cycle Evaluation Group, for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, part of the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS), where he led the evaluation of new payment and health system delivery reform programs and developed the rapid-cycle strategy to promote continuous quality improvement.
Will began his career as a practicing physician with Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and as an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School. His research at Harvard focused on improving the quality of prescribing and adherence to chronic medications. He has published over 250 papers on these topics. He serves on the Board of NCQA and is co-chair of the Clinical Transformation Taskforce for the Health Care Payment Learning and Action Network. Will received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Georgetown University and his fellowship in Health Policy Research at the University of California, Los Angeles. He also earned a Master of Science degree in health services from the University of California, Los Angeles and a bachelor’s degree from Brown University.
President and Chief Executive Officer, Volunteers of America, Mid States
Jennifer Hancock is the President and CEO of Volunteers of America of Mid-States. Jennifer earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work from the University of Kentucky, where she began a career dedicated to social justice and serving those who most need our community’s support and advocacy.
Jennifer has served our community in many capacities during her 20 years of professional leadership in the social service field and in her 13 years advancing the mission of VOA. Under her leadership, VOA has become a nationally recognized expert in providing family-focused and results-oriented solutions for the opioid and addiction crisis. In her time as President and CEO, Jennifer has guided VOA through a period of extensive growth, more than doubling its capacity to serve women overcoming substance use disorder and their children through the nationally recognized Freedom House program.
Jennifer is an adjunct faculty member at the University of Louisville Kent School of Social Work. Jennifer is active in her community, serving on the Kentucky Children’s Justice Act Task Force, University of Louisville School of Public Health Community Advisory Board, the Leadership Louisville Center, Impetus, Safe City Roundtable, Smart on Crime, National Volunteers of America Board of Directors, the AdventHealth Manchester Board of Directors and as an Advisory Council Member of Young Professionals Association of Louisville.
President and Chief Executive Officer, Meals on Wheels America
Ellie leads a nationwide network of thousands of community-based nutrition programs committed to assuring the health, safety and independence of America’s seniors. Her career spans both the for-profit and non-profit sectors, including as Chief Strategy Officer and EVP of Business Development at Good360, and EVP and Chief People Officer and Interim Associate Executive Director of Membership at AARP. Ellie graduated from Duke with double-majors and later from its Fuqua School of Business’ Advanced Management Program. She is a 2016 Silver Stevie® Award Female Executive of the Year winner and was recently named a “Moneyball for Government Nonprofit All-Star” by Results for America for her commitment to evidence-based work.
VP of Strategic Partnerships Friendship Line, Institute On Aging
Preston Burnes serves as IOA’s Vice-President of Strategic Partnerships focusing on building and growing innovative new programs with partners in the managed care, government and foundation space. He has deep experience developing programming to address social determinants of health and the delivery long-term services and supports from his seven years spent as a program and project manager at the Health Plan of San Mateo (or HPSM, a Medicaid MCP in the San Francisco Bay Area). His experience at HPSM included pilot development, provider management and contracting, stakeholder coordination, Whole Person Care, risk adjustment, PACE and strategic planning. Immediately prior to joining IOA Preston served as a consultant with Sellers Dorsey focused on Medicaid finance and managed care plan development for large hospital systems. He holds his MBA from Santa Clara University and his BA in political science from Colgate University.
Director, Population Health Strategy, Humana
Nicole Lowery is Director of Population Health Strategy in the Office of Health Affairs and Advocacy and has over 13 years of experience in the health care industry. She is responsible for Humana’s social determinant of health (SDOH) strategy, internal business integration, physician strategy and identification of SDOH benefit opportunities. This work directly supports Humana’s mission to help improve the health of the communities it serves by making it easier for people to achieve their best health.
Nicole joined Humana in October 2006. During her time with Humana, she gained expertise in commercial operations, process development, provider development, trend oversight and creation of physician focused programs.
